Josh Woodward

So here is a guy that distributes most of his tunes FOR FREE! His electric numbers are best not discussed here, but where this guy is a jewel is in his acoustic numbers. In songs like "Ships", he's possibly a bit breathy, and raw (I don't like hearing mouth noises in the mic, personally), but on "Good to Go", "I'm letting go", "Swansong", "Under the stairs" and "Mesmerized", he shows you what can be done folk style.

My biggest criticism would be vocal delivery, but then, in this style of music, it is acceptable, and even necessary, to have slightly raspy, and often, not well-breathed, vocal executions. However, the moment he attempts a quicker song, his voice delivery regulates and it's sounding pretty nice.

In terms of lyrical content, one can hardly point a finger here. "Under the stairs" is HAUNTING, and FREAKY!!! A gentle ballad about making a guy pay in a chair under the stairs typically gets a 9.o on the weird-crap-o-meter, only, this ain't crap, this is a great song! When the horror film community gets a hold of this song, you'll be hearing a lot more ballads on SAW and the like.

His instrumentation, as long as it leans toward the folk-acoustic genre, is impeccable, with great grooves and supporting sounds. I found his electric sound a bit thin, and his voice not quite holding its own there.

In general, this is a very exciting artist that you must be hearing more off. Go and find him here:

Ok - so this has nothing to do with the Music

But here is a really neat little South African news service I've been following:

News Today

Go check it out - it's in my opinion uncluttered, concise, neat.
