Karen Zoid - Postmodern World

The first all-English album from South Africa’s favourite rock-lady kicks off with the hit “Aeroplane Jane”, a up-tempo pop rocker that catches you with nifty hooks and riffs.

The title track is acoustic goodness followed by a reggae/ska-ish offering “Silly Town” and into the Edith Pfiaf like Pseudonym, showing a new angle on Zoid’s abilities and her strong, timbre rich voice.

Fast forwarding to Katherine Anne the spoken word sections over her voice is a fantastic touch, showing some real creative touch, although it is a bit dangerous, as spoken word sections on songs can suddenly take it into the cheesy country realm. She pulls through fairly successfully though.

Halfway through the album I’m still looking for an all-time anthem,… “Mama’s gonna sort you out” gives some edge to the album with some heavy riffing, but it still seems like the album is lacking a BIG melodic hit. So we continue…

The hard edge of the album does keep the feet stomping, with funk-like moments, allmost scat-like vocals and heavy rhythm, but melodically it seems like the songs don’t pick up. This is preference, and some will argue for, other against. Zoid’s voice is of such calibre in my opinion that bigger melodic ranges will take her songs into breathtaking from merely good at times. “Hold on to me” gets there in the verse sections, and one can sense a glimpse of true greatness coming through.

“You belong to me” is a new type of SA country, that deserves some more exploring from more bands.

In general I would make this as a solid offering from a solid artist, but I am looking for her to break free from a vocal and melodic mold that is still at this stage hampering her songwriting in my opinion. Her sales and support suggests that this is indeed a minor issue to others! Great work, at that. Preview and buy the album at the link below.
